Quinoa, The King of Grains
Quinoa is a unique ancient grain that has only recently been ‘discovered’ by the average American kitchen. Once a staple of the Incan empire, it was recognized for providing the stamina and strength required by battle-ready warriors.
A South American grain with a unique texture and nutty flavor, quinoa is an amazing source of protein, manganese, magnesium, iron, calcium, antioxidants and phytonutrients. In addition, quinoa is a whole grain that is actually gluten and allergen-free, making it an accessible food for all. It is also a major feature of many vegetarian diets.
Due to its high magnesium content, quinoa is particularly useful at providing migraine pain relief, decreasing hypertension and relaxing blood vessels. In conjunction with potassium, this also works to decrease the risk of heart disease by preventing clogged arteries. Quinoa’s high fiber content also helps fight heart disease, decreases the occurrence of cancer and diabetes and helps to prevent weight gain.
One particularly unique feature about quinoa is that it is a source of complete amino acids (the compounds that make up proteins), and provides a proper balance of all dietary protein requirements. This includes lysine, an amino acid that is vital for tissue growth and repair. In addition, quinoa makes an excellent replacement for rice and oatmeal as it is a better source of protein than either, and is a way to create a unique and interesting meal.
Commonly called a grain, quinoa is technically a seed – the incubator of all life - this explains why quinoa is such a powerful source of vital nutrients and minerals.
